When your sister-in-law/BFF asks you to help create a Where the Wild Things Are 1st birthday party for her little guy (your nephew), you, of course, say YES! One of our favorite books to read to our kids is Where the Wild Things Are.

It is filled with imaginative characters and a sentimental lesson all parents and children can appreciate. The main character, Max, reminded us so much of my little nephew, Bobby; there was no question that when it came time to plan his birthday party, we agreed, it just had to be a Where the Wild Things Are-themed birthday party. This Where the Wild Things Are 1st birthday party will make you want to get the rumpus started.

Every time I see a list of the best-ever picture books, it’s always in the top ten, if not number 1. And it’s the perfect party theme for boy or girl; baby or elementary school child.

Setting the Scene for Where the Wild Things Are Themed Party

Remember how the vines grew in Max’s bedroom? We found the Vines to decorate on Amazon. You can buy them here. The greenery comes in a 12 pack, each 84 inches long. You can also hang them from the ceiling.

We didn’t receive a red rider wagon until after Bobby’s party. I think if you’re throwing a Where the Wild Things Are party and have a red rider wagon, make a boat, just like Max’s ship. I would use poster board, tape, and markers to create a boat from his Radio Flyer wagon. You can buy a red rider wagon here.

Where the Wild Things Are Costume

My sister-in-law found Bobby’s costume at Party City. Every Wild One needs a classic baby Max costume. It’s the cutest thing ever. You can find it here.

Sweets

When Sarah, my sister-in-law asked me to help out with Bobby’s birthday; I went WILD! I found these little easels at Michaels and ordered the cookies from a local baker.

I ran into Publix and found GREEN cupcakes! Perfect. I found these toppers on Amazon.

Yummy Food

There is a lot of clever food you can serve at your party. For example, Moss Balls aka cheese balls. Roll the cheese into a ball and cover with chopped parsley to give it a mossy look. You can make crowns made of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and cut with a cookie cutter.

Everyone Halloween I make Monster Teeth with sliced apples, peanut butter, and mini marshmallows. They always go over well.

The Wild One

I found the perfect Where the Wild Things Balloon on Amazon too. You can find it here. The balloons come flat with one hand air pump (so you don’t need to go somewhere to get them filled.) They can not float but come with a string to hang them.
